CAREER OVERVIEW:

Mark Riley's employment at WBLS/ WLIB Radio in New York spans 24 years. He began his broadcasting career there as an intern while attending New York University. His skills offer a dynamic blend of manager, on-air performer, and production work; all achieved in New York City: the number one market for this industry.


EXPERIENCE:

WLIB 1190 AMMorning Drive Talk Show Host, "Real Talk".(1986-present)
Created and hosted the public affairs program Urban Notebook in 1983, which was broadcast live from the world famous Apollo Theatre. When the facilities moved to Park Avenue, the show evolved into Real Talk featuring news, views, and information; with an emphasis on politics and cultural arts. Exclusive interview highlights:  President Bill Clinton, President Nelson Mandela, Governor Cristine Whitman (R-NJ), former president Jean Bertrand Aristide (Haiti), former New York mayor David N. Dinkins, Gordon Parks, Lena Horne, Spike Lee, Max Roach, Bill Cosby, Harry Belafonte, Muhammad Ali, Arthur Mitchell, Wesley Snipes, Denzel Washington, Professor Cornell West (Harvard), and Don King.

Morning Co-Host, "The Melting Pot".(1995-97)
Co-hosted morning talk / music program with Dahved Levy

Program Director. (1992-96)
Accomplishments in the role of PD include identifying the diversity of the WLIB audience, and establishing more balance between the African American and Caribbean dimensions of the station's programming.  Also pioneered efforts to enhance listener awareness in the political arena, airing all Democratic and Republican conventions since 1990, plus coverage of Democratic Inaugurals in Haiti.

Executive Producer. (1982-92)
Helped supervise the transition of WLIB Music (AC) to All-Talk Radio. Developed topics for new programs. Responsible for program coverage of 1985 and 1989 New York mayoral campaigns.
 
 

 
WBLS 107.5 FMManaging Editor. (1979-82)
Supervised twice-hourly newscasts, responsible for story selection, and investigative reporting. Assigned and worked with station's street reporters.

Editor. (1976-79)
Worked with anchors and developed story ideas for all newscasts. Edited news copy for grammar and content. Responsible for continuity of news broadcasts between shifts. Conducted Newsmaker interviews during 1976 Democratic Convention.

Writer. (1973-76)
Worked closely with news anchor to create two newscasts per hour over eight-hour broadcast day. Gathered actualities for use in newscasts

Music. (AC/Jazz/Caribbean)
Programming Consultant to WBLS former Program Director Hal Jackson (Radio Hall Of Fame) and produced the daily WBLS Disco Party Mix (1977-79)


OTHER EXPERIENCE:

Television & Political Commentary. (1996-present)
Participated on panels for The Fox News Channel and New York 1 News. Have appeared on The Tavis Smiley Show for BET, Both Sides with Jesse Jackson on CNN, The Charles Grodin Show, and BBC2in London.

Speaking Engagements.
Spoken at countless venues, including: New York University, New Rochelle High School, the Langston Hughes Library in Queens, and the Slave Theatre in Brooklyn.

Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, the National Association of Black Journalists, the United Black Christians, Friends and Family of Trinidad and Tobago, and the Haitian-American Alliance for Progress.
